The sports world is in turmoil after bold remarks from basketball legend Michael Jordan targeted rising WNBA star Angel Reese, igniting a wave of backlash across social media platforms and sports media outlets.
In a recent podcast appearance, Jordan openly questioned Reese’s commitment to the game, accusing her of focusing more on her online persona than on improving her performance on the court.
“She’s got potential,” Jordan said. “But right now, she seems more interested in being an influencer than an elite basketball player. You can’t master the game if you’re too busy posing for Instagram.”
The comments quickly went viral, trending within hours under hashtags like #RespectAngelReese and #MJOutOfLine. Fans, athletes, and public figures have since flooded social media with strong reactions—many defending Reese and calling Jordan’s criticism outdated and unfair.
“This is misogyny disguised as ‘tough love,'” tweeted one prominent WNBA analyst. “Male athletes post shirtless and party on yachts with no pushback. But a young Black woman shows confidence and suddenly she ‘lacks focus’?”
Angel Reese, known for her unapologetic attitude and dominance on the court, fired back subtly via X (formerly Twitter), posting, “They don’t critique your game when they’re scared of your glow.”
Support also poured in from fellow athletes and celebrities. WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson tweeted, “Angel’s game speaks louder than any critic. Let’s stop tearing down our own.”
While some believe Jordan’s comments were meant to be constructive, the delivery and public platform he used have left many questioning his approach. Some fans noted that, given his own past as a highly marketed athlete with massive endorsement deals, Jordan’s remarks seemed hypocritical.
As the backlash grows, neither Jordan nor his representatives have issued a formal follow-up statement. Meanwhile, Reese continues her breakout WNBA season, letting her performance do the talking.
