What’s being said nationally about Michigan football landing No. 1 recruit Bryce Underwood
Carter Smith, a four-star quarterback in the class of 2025, decommitted from Michigan a few days prior. On November 4, head coach Sherrone Moore was asked if he was certain the Wolverines would add a quarterback this cycle. “We will be alright,” he said with a cunning smirk.
Moore was correct; on Thursday, he made one of the most significant impressions in Michigan recruiting history. After initially pledging to Louisiana State since January, Belleville five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, the nation’s top overall prospect, switched his commitment to Michigan.
With two five-stars and five top-100 prospects in Michigan’s 2025 class, which has already climbed into the top-10 in the 247Sports Composite rankings, the 6-foot-3 signal-caller immediately takes center stage. The Wolverines, who have one of the worst passing offenses in the nation in 2024, would have a huge victory if they could pry Underwood, who plays high school football less than 20 miles from Ann Arbor.
Here are some national reactions to Underwood’s choice to remain at home: Field Yates of ESPN wrote: “Bryce Underwood flipping from LSU is a significant get for Michigan.” The scouting community has a strong feeling that Garrett Nussmeier will be back at LSU for another season. Nussmeier’s comeback is all the more significant because of Underwood’s decommitment.
“GREAT news for Sherrone Moore and Michigan as they lock down QB Bryce Underwood. From a talent standpoint, they are getting one of the best in his class, but the real benefit is the ability to sell the direction of the program to attract other top recruits and portal players,” wrote Jake Butt, a former Michigan tight end and current Big Ten analyst.
