Tragic Fall:Kevin Gausman Rushed to the hospital in a critical condition
In eight brilliant innings, Kevin Gausman gave up only one hit and struck out ten, and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 on Tuesday to begin a nine-game trip. The Blue Jays are now four games ahead of Tampa Bay for the top AL wild-card slot after winning 11 of their last 13.
Before the trade deadline, which was an hour before first pitch, the Blue Jays were very busy. They acquired relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop from Miami, as well as two-time AL All-Star utility player Whit Merrifield from Kansas City.
“I think I am feeling wonderful,” stated John Schneider, the Blue Jays’ interim manager. “We are thrilled. We have faith in our group. The guys that are currently in here make up a tremendously strong team, and we just improved it.”
Before Walls singled for the Rays’ first hit to begin the sixth, Gausman (8-8) walked Randy Arozarena to start the first, hit Isaac Paredes with a pitch with one out, and then retired 14 consecutive batters. Out of 103 pitches, the right-hander threw 75 for strikes.
