In a move that has left the college basketball world stunned, the University of North Carolina has officially parted ways with head coach Hubert Davis and named former LSU coach Will Wade as the new leader of the Tar Heels basketball program.
The announcement came early Monday morning, just weeks after the conclusion of a disappointing 2024–25 season in which the Tar Heels fell short of expectations and failed to make a deep NCAA Tournament run. Despite Davis’s deep ties to the program as a former player and assistant under Roy Williams, UNC leadership made the decision to go in a new direction after four seasons at the helm.
“After careful consideration, we believe it’s time for a fresh start,” UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham said in a statement. “We thank Coach Davis for his service and dedication to Carolina basketball, and we’re excited to welcome Coach Will Wade to Chapel Hill.”
Will Wade, known for his aggressive coaching style and strong recruiting ability, brings both excitement and controversy. The former VCU and LSU head coach led multiple programs to NCAA Tournament appearances but was also at the center of an NCAA investigation related to recruiting violations — a chapter that has continued to follow his career.
Still, Wade has since returned to the college coaching scene and rebuilt his reputation with a successful stint at McNeese State. UNC’s decision to bring him in signals a bold, win-now mentality aimed at quickly restoring national title contention.
“I’m honored and humbled to lead one of the greatest programs in college basketball history,” Wade said in a statement released by the university. “I know what Carolina basketball means to its fans, its players, and the game itself. I’m ready to embrace that challenge.”
The reaction from fans and alumni has been mixed — with some expressing support for a proven winner, and others voicing concerns over Wade’s past. Nonetheless, excitement is building as the Tar Heels turn the page and prepare for a new era.
With the transfer portal heating up and recruiting already underway for 2026, all eyes will now be on Wade to see how quickly he can reestablish UNC as a dominant force in college hoops.
One thing is clear: Change has come to Chapel Hill — and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
