Over the course of eight seasons, Castle has maintained its unique blend of comedy, drama, and crime with style. This has been made possible, first by the antics of stars Beckett (Stana Katic) and Castle (Nathan Fillion), and more recently by the “they did, and it is complicated” plotline that caused many other series to end.
Australian viewers of the US drama are finally catching up to their American counterparts this week, as two episodes culminate 2016 and feature the mid-season finale.
Despite their approaching first anniversary, the unstable couple is still taking a break from their romance as of Sunday night.
The title of Wednesday night’s mid-season finale, Mr. and Mrs. Castle, is a reference to the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film Mr. & Mrs. Smith, with Castle’s characteristically complex and eccentric outcomes.
US media was assured by Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter, the showrunners of Castle, that there will be lots to come in 2019.
Hawley remarked, “We are not leaving you on a cliffhanger—rather, we are giving you a promise of what it will be like when we return.”
The two pledge that the benefits will be worthwhile when Castle returns to the show the following year, but they do not apologize for putting the fans of the program “through a lot” in the first half of this season.
According to Winter’s statement to press, “These are two characters who have gone through a lot over the last eight years. A lot of emotionally difficult, painful circumstances… There is going to be stuff both Beckett and Castle have to work through.”
