Over the past year, Chappell Roan, the singer of the popular song “Good Luck, Babe” and the winner of the VMA for Best New Artist, has had a rapid ascent to stardom. Due of his quick ascent to popularity, Roan was constantly the target of criticism. Because of the immense scrutiny she faces, Roan has made several decisions that have admirers (including us) wondering if the internet is putting too much emphasis on her.
Since Roan declined to support Democratic presidential contender and incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris, she has been the target of hate mail. After prominent musicians like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish endorsed Harris, a lot of fans were hoping (or clamoring) for something comparable from Roan.
Later on, Roan made it clear that while she will vote for Harris, she will not be endorsing her due of her disagreement with her position on the Gaza humanitarian catastrophe. Roan believes that the Democratic Party ought to take a more proactive stance
It is evident that Roan’s personal celebrity and what her admirers want from her differ. She is clearly resisting the accepted societal conventions of “fan culture” and the barriers that we believe ought to exist between superstars and their fans yet do not.

With your favorite celebrity (or influencer) always just a few clicks away, social media has made it easier than ever for followers to “connect” with famous people.
It is true that most of Roan’s supporters do not know her well. Since we do not directly know her, we believe it is quite reasonable for her to feel uneasy about the way she is being portrayed as an idol. We agree that as fans, we have no right to dictate to Roan how and when she should voice her opinions on significant matters, even though we do think that having a big platform comes with some responsibility. Not to add, Roan was bringing up significant topics like LGBTQ+ rights and regulations as well as the humanitarian situation in Gaza. She made it clear who she would vote for, yet she still encountered criticism because she did not give a presidential contender her full support.
