The NBA has handed down strict penalties to the Los Angeles Lakers organization following an alarming incident in which several Lakers fans were involved in the alleged assault of a Denver Nuggets player after a heated playoff matchup.
The incident occurred outside Crypto.com Arena late Tuesday night, shortly after the Lakers’ dramatic overtime win against the Nuggets in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals. According to eyewitness reports and security footage, a group of Lakers fans physically confronted Nuggets guard Jamal Murray while he was exiting the arena’s side entrance.
Murray was reportedly shoved and verbally harassed before security intervened. He did not sustain serious injuries, but the NBA has taken the situation seriously, citing “a breach of player safety and organizational responsibility.”
In a statement released Thursday morning, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced the following sanctions:
– A $500,000 fine imposed on the Los Angeles Lakers for “failure to ensure adequate post-game player security.”
– A temporary ban on the involved fans, who have been identified, from all NBA arenas for a minimum of five years.
– Mandatory review and upgrade of the Lakers’ arena security protocols by June 2025.
“We will not tolerate any actions that jeopardize the safety of our players,” Silver said. “Organizations have a duty to provide a secure environment both on and off the court.”
The Lakers issued an apology to Murray and the Nuggets organization, stating that they are “fully cooperating with league officials and local authorities.”
This incident has reignited the league-wide conversation about fan behavior and player security, especially during high-stakes playoff games.
More details are expected as the investigation continues.
