University of Kentucky men’s basketball head coach Mark Pope revealed this week that rising basketball star Otega Oweh left him emotional with a heartfelt announcement about his future in the sport.
Speaking during a press conference on Monday, Pope described a powerful moment between him and Oweh that culminated in what he called “one of the most emotional experiences” of his coaching career. According to Pope, the talented guard informed him personally of his decision to declare for the 2025 NBA Draft — a move that, while expected by many, still hit home for the coach.
“Otega sat down with me and shared his heart — his dreams, his fears, and his gratitude,” Pope said. “It wasn’t just about basketball. It was about growth, about family, about the journey we’ve shared. By the time he finished, I was in tears.”
Oweh, who transferred to Kentucky for the 2024–25 season, made an immediate impact on the team with his athleticism, leadership, and explosive performances on the court. Averaging 17.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game, he quickly became a fan favorite and a crucial piece of the Wildcats’ lineup.
Despite only playing one season under Pope, the bond between the two was evident throughout the year. Pope praised Oweh not only for his skill but for his maturity and work ethic.
“Otega gave this program everything he had,” Pope added. “He’s going to make waves at the next level, and I couldn’t be prouder — even if it means shedding a few tears along the way.”
Oweh is projected to be a late first-round to early second-round pick in the upcoming draft, and scouts have praised his defensive tenacity, court vision, and high basketball IQ.
As the Wildcats prepare for next season, Pope says Oweh’s legacy will remain a motivating force for the program: “His impact goes beyond the box score. He showed what it means to lead with heart.”
