Emma Raducanu has revealed the reason behind the unexpected doctor’s intervention during her recent defeat to Jessica Pegula at the 2025 Australian Open, shedding light on the physical struggles she faced during the match.
Raducanu, who battled hard against the American world number three, was forced to call for medical assistance in the second set after experiencing discomfort. The British star later explained that she had been suffering from a recurring issue with her wrist, which had flared up during the match. “I’ve been dealing with a bit of wrist pain recently, and it just got worse during the match,” Raducanu said after her 6-4, 7-6 loss to Pegula. “It was affecting my ability to serve and hit with the power I usually rely on, so I needed some medical attention.”
The intervention came at a critical point in the match, as Raducanu was trying to stay competitive against the in-form Pegula, who took full advantage of the situation. However, Raducanu’s resilience was clear, and she managed to finish the match despite the physical discomfort. “It wasn’t easy to keep going, but I didn’t want to retire or give up,” Raducanu added. “I tried to push through the pain, but it’s part of the process in dealing with injuries.”
Despite the setback, the British player remains optimistic about her recovery and future performances. “I’m getting treatment for my wrist and focusing on staying in shape,” she said. “It’s just part of the journey, and I know I’ll come back stronger.”
The defeat to Pegula was another tough loss in Raducanu’s quest for consistency on the tour, but her ability to fight through the pain demonstrates her commitment to improving and pushing herself to the limit. Fans are hopeful that, with proper recovery and a continued focus on injury management, Raducanu can return to her best form and build on the potential she showcased during her stunning US Open victory in 2021.
