Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer opened up in a candid press conference this week, reflecting on the team’s underwhelming season and what he believes went wrong. After high preseason expectations and a strong recruiting class, the Blue Devils fell short in both the ACC tournament and March Madness, leaving fans and analysts asking what derailed the promising campaign.
“Consistency was our biggest issue,” Scheyer admitted. “We showed flashes of who we could be, but couldn’t sustain it when it mattered most. Some of that falls on me.”
Scheyer pointed to several key factors, including defensive breakdowns, a lack of veteran leadership, and injuries that disrupted the team’s rhythm. He also emphasized that while individual talent was high, the group struggled with on-court chemistry.
“We had the talent to go deep,” Scheyer said. “But talent alone doesn’t win championships—you need cohesion, discipline, and experience. We didn’t have enough of that at the right times.”
Despite the disappointing finish, Scheyer remains optimistic. “This is still Duke basketball. We’re not lowering the bar. We learn, we adjust, and we come back stronger.”
The Blue Devils are already looking ahead to the offseason, with player development, roster decisions, and recruiting taking center stage. Fans can expect a reenergized and focused Duke squad come next season.
