The renowned Batcave club night in London may have vanished with the 1980s, but goth culture is still very much alive and well. Later this month, the Museum of Youth Culture will honor this trend with a retrospective of nostalgic photos by photographer Derek Ridgers at its pop-up in Soho.
If you are not up to date on British subcultures, the Batcave was a weekly club night that began in central London in 1982 and is recognized as the genesis of the Goth subculture in southern England. Derek Ridgers was there to document it all directly. Any given week, you could go in and rub elbows with celebrities like Siouxie Sioux, Nick Cave, and Robert Smith.
This month, the museum is dissecting other subcultures than just goth. This coming weekend, on March 18, there will be a celebration of Emma Warren’s new book Dance Your Way Home, which will include an afternoon of Jungle. The audience is invited to bring their own old photos, flyers, ephemera, and objects to be scanned and added to the collection.
Meanwhile, Club Cowgirl will host the inaugural Club Cowgirl Chats at the museum at the end of the month. The event will feature a discussion about working-class perspectives in the music and creative sectors, as well as how the industry should aim to become more inclusive.
