It’s rare to see something like this. Due to his behavior during the Philadelphia Eagles’ victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 3, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was fined three times by the NFL. He also lost half of his game check for two taunting infractions and an illegal hit. For his own benefit, he was a touch too keen to pursue his former team.
Gardner-Johnson’s citation for unwarranted roughness—which amounted to $11,255—was previously reported. He landed a late blow on Saints running back Alvin Kamara after the play went out of bounds. However, a league probe discovered that Gardner-Johnson was fined $16,883 twice for going too far in mocking his opponents.
The total comes to $45,021 that is deducted from Gardner-Johnson’s compensation. According to Over The Cap, he is paid a base salary of $1,375,000 this year, or around $80,882 a week (before taxes) for 17 game checks.
Because Gardner-Johnson was too hot under the collar, he really lost a little over half of his game check. That is a costly bit of trash talk. It is fortunate for him that Philly did not lose the game as a result of the late score he let up to Chris Olave.
