Alexander Zverev reveals major health scare after pulling out of China Open – ‘I have to take care of my health’…
This week’s China Open will not include Alexander Zverev, as the world No. 2 has disclosed the cause of his recent “physical troubles.”
Zverev was defeated by the American in his first singles match at the Laver Cup on Saturday, only weeks after falling to Taylor Fritz in the US Open quarterfinal. That setback occurred just one day after Fritz and Ben Shelton defeated him and Carlos Alcaraz in the doubles.
Zverev, however, atoned for his mistakes on the last day of competition as he helped Team Europe overcome Team World 13-11 by defeating Frances Tiafoe in a fifth set tie-breaker.
However, Zverev’s performance during the event was obviously subpar, and he has since admitted that he is suffering from pneumonia.
The 27-year-old told the Deutschen Presse-Agentur, “Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with pneumonia, which explains the physical challenges I have had in recent months.”
“I have to prioritize my health in order to return to competition as soon as possible,” he continued.

Zverev was scheduled to start as the second seed in the China Open; however, he withdrew before Tuesday’s draw was made official. At the Beijing ATP 500, Miomir Kecmanovic took the German’s place.
“I regret having to withdraw from the China Open so much. I hope to have the opportunity to perform in front of my Chinese fans in Beijing once again soon. I shall miss them,” he remarked.
After the competition, Zverev will lose 170 ranking points. Carlos Alcaraz, who is now in third place with 195 points less than Zverev, will have a chance to pass him, but he must go to at least the final.
