Luke Fickell clarifies Badgers starting quarterback moving forward
Luke Fickell, the coach of Wisconsin, provided a clear update on the Badgers’ quarterback situation on Monday. Fickell was quick to respond to questions from the media on redshirt sophomore Braedyn Locke’s position as UW’s starting quarterback. Locke will continue to start for the squad.
Two days after UW lost its highly anticipated game against No. 1 Oregon, the update was released. Prior to giving up 10 points to the top-ranked Ducks in the final quarter, Wisconsin had a 13–6 lead. With 12 of 28 passes completed for 96 yards, one score, and one interception, Locke had a difficult game.
With Locke starting at center, UW hopes to bounce back from a three-game losing run and the coaching change. Locke has completed 129 ball attempts for 1,514 yards, nine touchdowns, and nine interceptions in nine games so far this season. Since taking over for Tyler Van Dyke following his injury, he has accumulated up to 10 turnovers in seven starts.
Mabrey Mettauer is Wisconsin’s alternative choice at the position and a true freshman. Only one collegiate pass has been attempted by the four-star recruit, and he does not seem prepared for high-stakes game action. Fans may anticipate more of the same from the second-year Badger, especially considering Locke’s sample size as the starter this season. Wisconsin’s success versus rival Nebraska depends on their ability to handle the football
