Urgent:Colin Firth Rushed to the Hospital in a Critical Condition
When Colin Firth played Mr. Darcy in the BBC’s 1995 rendition of Pride and Prejudice, millions of fans worldwide swooned over him when he marched out of a lake in a wet shirt. Now, that same garment was purchased at a London auction for £25,000.
Now, that same garment was purchased at a London auction for £25,000. It was valued between £7,000 to £10k by auctioneers prior to the sale. On Tuesday, over 60 movie and
Treasures from the archives of Cosprop, a costume company started by Oscar-winning designer John Bright, were up for auction at the Kerry Taylor Auctions-hosted sale. Despite not actually appearing in Jane Austen’s novel, the wet shirt scene has gone on to become one of the most well-known TV scenes ever.
Filmed at Lyme Park near Stockport in Greater Manchester, it featured Mr. Darcy (Firth) swimming spontaneously in his own lake before he left in his clinging, wet white shirt and ran into Elizabeth Bennet (Jennifer Ehle), his love interest. Firth was immediately turned into a sex icon as viewers were riveted to their screens.
Even the TV shows Bridgerton and Bridget Jones’ Diary have portrayed the incident on screen. The shirt, which is now dry, has been sold nearly thirty years later. The hammer cost £20,000, which was double the initial estimate. The entire amount of £25,000, including the £5,000 buyer’s premium, will be donated to a worthy cause.
It is one of numerous shirts that were worn when the movie was being filmed. “A third is still in the Cosprop archive, and another was already put up for charity sale,” auctioneer Taylor told BBC News. The Christian Dior ball gown that Madonna wore in Evita, Drew Barrymore’s Ever After costume, and Meryl Streep’s dress and cape from The French Lieutenant’s Woman were among the other costumes up for auction.
