Urgent:Bills sign ex-Commanders WR Curtis Samuel to 3-year, $24 million contract
Over the past two days, the Buffalo Bills have placed a special emphasis on their wide receiver corps as part of their ongoing roster reorganization. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that they are signing speedster Curtis Samuel, a former member of the Washington Commanders and Carolina Panthers.
The contract is worth $24 million for three years and has the potential to be worth up to $30 million. General manager Brandon Beane of the Bills was determined to replenish the team’s depth at receiver after Gabe Davis signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in NFL free agency. There is no better way than to get back together with a former acquaintance.
When the Panthers selected Samuel in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Beane was in the front office. Furthermore, during the 27-year-old wide receiver’s final season with the organization (2020–21), Buffalo offensive coordinator Joe Brady had the same position with Carolina. With 77 receptions, over 1,000 yards from scrimmage, and five touchdowns overall, Samuel’s season with Brady as his offensive coordinator stands out as his greatest in the NFL.
Therefore, there is reason to think that Orchard Park will benefit from this reunion. As a backup on a Commanders team that continuously withstood offensive constraints, Samuel amassed respectable stats (62 catches for 613 yards). He now goes back to his home state to work with one of the league’s top quarterbacks.
