Sha’Carri Richardson’s top-end speed makes her a deadly weapon for Team USA in relays, as Twanisha Terry has described after she helped them win gold in the 4x100m at the Olympics.
When Sha’Carri Richardson pulled off an incredible comeback to defeat Team Britain and Germany and win the gold in the 4x100m relay at the Paris Olympics, she was the talk of the town for Team USA.
Terry, a training mate of Sha’Carri Richardson, says working close with the world 100m champion has allowed her to learn a number of tactics and also understand her strengths which she is thankful that they can employ to good effect.
“Throughout the season, we see each other’s strengths and weaknesses. So, like for instance, Sha’Carri, we know she has excellent top-end speed. She’s going to hold down the fourth leg no matter what,” Terry said during a conversation with Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller.
During the 4x100m relay final, Melissa Jefferson started the race for Team USA before passing the baton to Twanisha Terry who would hand it to Gabby Thomas and the Olympics 200m champion gave it to Sha’Carri Richardson to complete the race.
By the time Gabby Thomas was passing it to Sha’Carri Richardson, though, Team Britain and Germany had already taken the lead. Nevertheless, the Dallas native outran them both and won, giving them a rebellious look in the process.
“We basically capitalize on each other’s advantages and disadvantages, and the coach also provides input,” Terry continued.
Terry is grateful that her “sisters” helped her tremendously because it allowed her to take home a gold medal from the Olympics. I doubt I would be sitting here now if it weren’t for them. They pushed me in directions I didn’t know I could go. The group itself raises your mental game to a new level.
