hapiro: A Pop Star Musical opens on Saturday, August 31, at 7:30 p.m. at the Esplanade venue. The modest studio at the new Greenside @ George Street venue was sold out for its five-night run, and it was joined by a number of additional concerts. The new musical by Kingdom Theatre Company chronicles the early years of pop star Helen Shapiro. She scored two number one hits by 1961, including Walking Back to Happiness, and was selling 40,000 records a day at the age of fifteen.
By the time she reached sixteen, she had five top ten singles under her belt and had supported The Beatles on tour. However, her stardom did not last long, as it began to fade in her late teens. She met the youthful cast earlier this year as they were ready to present her narrative, and she has been performing and singing ever since.
Written by Fife Free Press journalist John Murray, Shapiro: A Pop Star Musical has original songs by Murray and local musician Willie Logan in addition to her greatest hits.
