The third husband of Doris Day unexpectedly passed away, leaving her in debt after…
Doris Day had emerged as one of the biggest box office successes by the early 1960s. Regarded parts in “Pillow Talk” and “The Man Who Knew Too Much” were hers, and she was nominated for two Academy Awards.
Day wrote more than 600 songs, with successes like “Sentimental Journey” and “My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time” reaching number one on the charts.
Her life off the big screen was anything but successful, even with her career success in music and film. She had many heartbreaks in her life, which was a far cry from her happy and flawless image on TV. Day started making plans for her escape after she was hit by her first husband on the second day of their marriage. But leaving was quickly put out of her mind when she found out she was expecting Terry Jorden.
Even during her pregnancy, her husband physically mistreated her, until she finally ejected him from their house in 1943. After that, the famous Hollywood persona wed her second husband. However, that too was short-lived.
When Day remarried to Motion Picture and Music Executive Martin Melcher, she anticipated that marriage would succeed the third time around. At the time, she was only 29.
Since Melcher had taken over as Day’s manager after accusing Day of being stalked by her first agency, their encounter was strictly business-related. She was in for a harsh awakening, but she had assumed that happiness would finally find her. She remembered:
But when Day found out that Melcher had begun abusing her kid, the truth began to emerge. He did not treat Day well either. In hindsight, Melcher was simply considering his own interests when he pressured Day to accept parts that he claimed would bring in large sums of money. Melcher would pilfer her riches as soon as the funds arrived in her bank account.
