Many people consider the 41-year-old Swiss star, who has won 20 Grand Slam titles, to be the greatest player to ever pick up a racket.
Roger Federer revealed on Thursday that he will be retiring from competitive tennis following next week’s Laver Cup in London, confirming the long-feared news for tennis fans worldwide.
The 41-year-old Swiss, who is thought by many to be the greatest player to ever pick up a racquet and has 20 Grand Slam victories, has not participated in a match since Wimbledon of last year.
Federer wrote on Instagram, “As many of you know, the previous three years have given me great hurdles in the form of injuries and operations.”
“To get back to my peak competitive form, I have worked really hard. However, I am also aware of my body’s limitations, and lately, I have received a clear warning from it. My age is forty-one.
Following his first Grand Slam victory at Wimbledon in 2003, Federer dominated men’s tennis. However, in recent years, injuries have plagued him.
