At the Miami Open, Emma Raducanu lost to Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2, after experiencing a health scare. During her run to the quarterfinals, the British player had already defeated four Americans, including Emma Navarro, the eighth seed. But during the second set, Raducanu’s vitals were checked and she required courtside care from the doctor.
Novak Djokovic’s matchup with Sebastian Korda was canceled due to the long match between Raducanu and Pegula, which took place fourth on Florida’s main court. Although ATP regulations prohibit matches from commencing beyond 11 p.m. local time, the Serb was slated to start fifth on center court. After defeating Korda to advance to the semi-final on Thursday, the 24-time Grand Slam champion was forced to make a comeback.
Emma Raducanu lost to No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open, ending her run. The 22-year-old lost to a top player in a top-tier match while attempting to win her maiden championship since taking home the 2021 US Open.
Raducanu’s opponents had used medical timeouts in the previous two rounds, but this time, she was the one experiencing health problems. Late in the second set, she experienced dizziness and had to have her left leg treated. She leveled the score after falling behind 2-0 in the tiebreak with some of her greatest play of the match, but Pegula won the decisive set.
The incredible upset of world No. 2 Iga Swiatek earlier in the day by wildcard Alexandra Eala increased the stakes of this quarterfinal even further. The 19-year-old Filipino has been the talk of the past two weeks and is playing some amazing tennis, but Raducanu and Pegula were envious of the opportunity to face the world No. 140 in a 1000-series semifinal.
