After giving what has been called one of the greatest post-match statements in the history of the customary Anzac Day match, Darcy Moore is the talk of the AFL community. The Magpies overcame a 28-point deficit at three-quarter time to win 13.12 (90) to 11.11 (77) on Tuesday, thanks to the Collingwood captain’s amazing comeback.

Moore accepted the Anzac Cup as the winning skipper on the day, before blowing the AFL world away with his victory speech. “First and foremost, I would want to express my sincere gratitude to the 95,000 people present—a record-breaking throng,” he stated.

“This game is about so much more than four points, regardless of whether you wear the red sash or the black and white stripes. We are immensely happy to be playing our part in this game, and your presence and support today mean a lot.

“Thank you so much to Andrew (McGrath), the team, and the entire club at Essendon for making this event what it is. Being able to join your football team in honoring the sacrifices made by all Australian servicemen and women worldwide, not just the Anzacs, means a great deal to us. Thus, I would want to thank the Essendon Football Club.

“I would want to express my gratitude to all of the men and women who are fighting for our nation’s interests in both domestic and international conflicts as well as peacekeeping missions. The fact that we can honor your service and sacrifice today by carrying out our duties means a great deal to me, the team, and the entire club. Thus, I appreciate your service.

“To the veterans—there are more than 600,000 of you in our country who have served—we also thank you for your sacrifice and hope that our actions today in some way honor your legacy and what you have done for our nation. I also want to thank those 600,000 veterans.
