Sad News: Robert Smith, a rock icon, passed away recently.
Robert Smith, who was speaking to NME backstage at the BandLab NME Awards 2022, gave us the rundown on The Cure’s upcoming album and revealed its name to us exclusively. View our entire chat with Smith on video above.
After teasing the group’s eagerly awaited “merciless” new record for a while and telling us that two new albums were in the works at the most recent NME Awards in 2020, Smith finally disclosed tonight that one of the albums would be “real very soon” in addition to providing more details about both its sister record and his much-anticipated solo album.
Smith told NME, “I have been working on two Cure albums, and one of them is finished.” Sadly, it is the second one that is been completed. Each album has ten tracks, and [on the other] I have to sing four voices. I have three weeks remaining, as April 1st of next month is when we mix.
“I know what it is called; it is called Songs Of A Lost World,” he said. It has a running order, artwork, and is nearly finished! The vinyl is the reason they are moving so slowly, but September may bring it. Better yet, just let it out. I find the anticipation unbearable.
When asked how the next LPs might sound, Smith replied, “Well, the first Cure album is unremitting dread and gloom.” It is the most idiotic thing we have ever done. The first is optimistic, and my [solo] piece will not be released until the following year.
I have to go over it again and again. I had wanted to do it for a very long time. Since I know I only have one chance to get it right, I have started incorporating real and acoustic instruments into my music. Two years ago, it was only feedback, but I have gotten a little bored with it. After listening to it for about three times, I decided it was garbage.
