Roy Williams is widely celebrated as one of the greatest college basketball coaches in the history of the sport, and his legacy at the University of North Carolina is nothing short of iconic. Best known for his 18-year tenure as head coach of the UNC men’s basketball team from 2003 to 2021, Williams left an indelible mark on the program, the university, and the game itself.
During his time in Chapel Hill, Williams compiled an astounding 485–163 record, led the Tar Heels to five Final Fours, and captured three NCAA national championships (2005, 2009, and 2017). His teams were known for their fast-paced offense, relentless rebounding, and an unwavering commitment to teamwork and discipline — values he instilled in every player who wore the Carolina blue.
Before returning to coach at his alma mater, Williams spent 15 successful seasons at the University of Kansas, where he also made four Final Four appearances. Across his entire career, he amassed 903 wins, making him one of only a handful of coaches to surpass the 900-win mark — a testament to both his longevity and his excellence.
But beyond the numbers, it’s the relationships, integrity, and mentorship that define Williams’ legacy. Countless former players speak of him not just as a coach, but as a life-changing mentor who demanded excellence on the court and character off of it.
“Coach Williams changed my life,” said former Tar Heel and NBA star Ty Lawson. “He believed in me when I needed it most. He pushed us hard, but it was always out of love and a desire to make us better men.”
Following his retirement in 2021, Williams remained deeply involved in the UNC community, attending games, mentoring young coaches, and advocating for student-athlete welfare. His influence continues to shape the program, which remains one of the most respected and competitive in the nation.
UNC honored Williams with a statue outside the Dean Smith Center in 2023, a fitting tribute to a man who carried on the rich tradition of Tar Heel basketball and elevated it to new heights.
