In the second quarter of Ohio State’s 21-17 victory over Nebraska on Saturday, the standout freshman wide out caught a 60-yard touchdown throw from Will Howard. Smith had already caught eight touchdowns this season, and it was his ninth overall.
Smith has caught at least one touchdown in each of the seven games he has played in, in addition to scoring nine touchdowns overall. Since Sidney Rice in 2005, he is the only true freshman to score touchdowns in his team’s first seven games of the season. The former South Carolina standout had one of the greatest rookie campaigns in wide receiver history. In 2005, Rice caught 70 passes for 1,143 yards and 13 touchdowns. Additionally, Smith is headed to break an Ohio State record. Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter was matched for the most receiving touchdowns in a season by an OSU freshman after the 60-yard catch.
