TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported Wednesday Patrik Laine and the Columbus Blue Jackets have a mutual interest in parting ways during the off-season.
LeBrun indicated Laine’s agent had spoken to the Blue Jackets about his client’s wish to seek a fresh start elsewhere. He has two years remaining on his contract with an average annual value of $8.7 million and a 10-team no-trade list.
This news comes following a difficult season for the 26-year-old winger. Injuries limited him to just 18 games before he entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in January.
The Hockey News’ Jason Newland cited The Columbus Dispatch‘s Brian Hedger reporting Laine’s agent spoke with the Jackets before GM-president of hockey operations Don Waddell joined the club on May 28. Waddell hopes to speak soon with Laine, prompting Newland to wonder if he can change the winger’s mind.
Meanwhile, the news sparked speculation about possible trade destinations for Laine. His contract and injury history could be a difficult sell in the trade market. However, he’s a former 40-goal scorer who could benefit from a change of scenery. A club seeking scoring depth could take the chance given he has only two years left on his deal.
The Hockey News’ Jacob Stoller listed Utah Hockey Club, Chicago Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, and Montreal Canadiens as potential trade destinations.

Last month, we cited a TVA Sports report suggesting the Canadiens look into Laine. He’s the right age to fit with their rebuilding roster, but they could be on his no-trade list. There’s also the risk that he might wilt under the intense pressure of playing in Montreal. GM Kent Hughes could be considering more affordable trade options.
