Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka is under fire this week after footage emerged showing the World No. 2 in a heated altercation with a chair umpire during a match at the French Open. The incident, which involved Sabalenka shouting profanities and refusing to shake the umpire’s hand after a controversial call, has ignited a fierce backlash online.
The video quickly went viral, prompting a wave of criticism from fans and commentators alike. Many called the outburst “unsportsmanlike” and accused Sabalenka of setting a poor example for young fans.
“She’s an incredible athlete, no doubt,” said former pro and commentator Mary Carillo. “But behavior like that isn’t what the sport—or its future players—need to see.”
The hashtag #NotARoleModel began trending on social media shortly after the incident, with many users demanding a fine or disciplinary action from the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
In response, Sabalenka took to Instagram with a brief statement:
*”I’m passionate, and I let that get the better of me today. I respect the officials, but I’m human, and sometimes emotions win. I’ll learn from this.”*
Despite the apology, critics argue it’s part of a pattern of behavior that undermines her reputation as a global ambassador for the sport. Supporters, however, have rushed to her defense, praising her fiery competitiveness and noting the double standards often applied to male and female athletes.
The WTA has yet to issue an official statement on potential penalties. Meanwhile, Sabalenka is still in the running at Roland-Garros, but with the spotlight now sharply focused on her conduct as much as her performance.
