Former world No. 1 and five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova has found herself in the eye of a social media storm after controversial comments about the new generation of tennis stars sparked intense backlash across the tennis world.
During an exclusive sit-down interview on a luxury wellness podcast, Sharapova was asked about the current state of women’s tennis and the rise of Gen Z players like Coco Gauff, Emma Raducanu, and Leylah Fernandez.
Her response was as sharp as her backhand:
“I see talent, sure—but not the same drive. These girls have Instagram strategy teams before they even have a second serve. It’s all about image now, not substance.”
The quote ignited instant outrage online. Fans and tennis insiders accused Sharapova of being “out of touch,” “jealous,” and even “hypocritical,” given her own lucrative endorsements and carefully curated public image during her peak years.
“This is rich coming from someone who was once the face of a candy brand while competing at Wimbledon,” tweeted one fan.
Coco Gauff appeared to respond subtly on X (formerly Twitter):
“We’re focused on the grind and the brand. Multi-tasking isn’t a crime.”
Meanwhile, Raducanu’s agent declined to comment, but insiders say she was “disappointed” and felt the remarks were “unnecessary and dismissive.”
Tennis great Billie Jean King weighed in on the controversy, stating:
“The game evolves. The next generation doesn’t need to be a copy of the last. Maria should know that better than anyone.”
Sharapova, who retired in 2020 and has since built a successful business empire, has not walked back the remarks, but released a brief statement late Wednesday:
“Every generation is different. I have immense respect for today’s players. My comments were meant to highlight how the game has changed—not diminish anyone.”
Still, the damage may be done. While some fans applauded her “honesty,” others say it was a thinly veiled jab at young stars who are bringing fresh energy—and serious game—to the court.
One thing is clear: even in retirement, Maria Sharapova still knows how to stir the pot.
