With a victory at the US Open, World No. 1 Williams—whose 22 Grand Slam victories to date match Graf’s total—can pass the German and trail Margaret Court’s 24 triumphs by only one significant victory. The former world number one, Graf, maintains that she would be pleased to see Williams surpass her performance at Flushing Meadows.
“I’m excited and happy for her,” she said on CNN’s Open Court. “They are there to break records, which is why I think it’s cool. It’s been amazing to see her play tennis; she’s been amazing. I’m hoping she breaks it.” Between 1987 and 1999, Graf amassed 22 championships, whereas Williams, at 34, began to dominate in 2002.
Although the 47-year-old anticipates Williams to go for many more championships, he thinks fellow German Angelique Kerber may wind up as the top female player in tennis. Graf said of her fellow countrywoman: “Over the years, I’ve gotten to know her a little bit.” She has come to our mini tennis camp at the Adidas program in Las Vegas.
“She possesses great physical strength. She works so hard. Hey, she won the Australian Open and made it to the finals. She is capable of everything.”
