In a recent interview that offered a rare glimpse into his personal motivations, Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer opened up about why he chose to take the reins of one of college basketball’s most iconic programs.
Scheyer, who succeeded legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski in 2022, said the decision wasn’t just about legacy — it was about loyalty, purpose, and a deep belief in Duke’s culture.
*”This isn’t just a job. It’s home,”* Scheyer said. *”Coach K built something special here, and I’ve been a part of that as a player, assistant, and now head coach. I felt a responsibility to continue that legacy — but also to bring my own vision to it.”*
The former Blue Devil standout spoke candidly about his emotional connection to the university, the brotherhood forged during his championship run in 2010, and the mentorship he received under Krzyzewski.
*”Duke gave me the tools to grow — not just as a player, but as a person. That’s what I want to give back to our guys now. It’s not about replacing Coach K. No one can. It’s about evolving while respecting what came before.”*
Scheyer also highlighted his commitment to academic excellence, player development, and fostering a team culture rooted in accountability and resilience — values he says are “non-negotiable” in the program’s future.
Since taking over, Scheyer has led Duke to multiple NCAA tournament appearances and is seen by many as a rising star in college basketball coaching. With his clear vision and heartfelt commitment, it’s now easy to see why he chose — and continues to choose — Duke.
