Reigning Finals MVP Nikola Jokić raised eyebrows during a postgame press conference Monday night when he admitted to feeling “confused” about the Denver Nuggets’ offensive system—a startling revelation from the man often dubbed the brain behind their attack.
“We used to have a rhythm, a flow,” Jokić told reporters after the Nuggets’ narrow loss to the Phoenix Suns. “Now, sometimes I don’t know what we’re trying to do. There are too many changes, too much improvisation.”
While Jokić didn’t name names, analysts suspect the confusion may stem from recent lineup tweaks and rotational experiments—particularly the mid-season addition of Russell Westbrook and the shifting roles of key bench players. With the Nuggets trying to balance tempo and spacing, their once fluid offense has occasionally looked disjointed.
“Jokić is a system unto himself,” said NBA analyst Rachel Nichols. “If he’s confused, that’s a red flag. He’s one of the most cerebral players in the league.”
Head coach Michael Malone acknowledged the growing pains but defended the team’s evolving approach. “We’re trying to prepare for different playoff looks. It’s not always going to be pretty,” Malone said.
The Nuggets, still among the top seeds in the West, now face a critical stretch as they look to fine-tune their system ahead of the playoffs. Jokić remains the team’s cornerstone, but his candid comments suggest the reigning champs may need to recalibrate to get back to championship form.
