Is Indiana Jones’s story truly over with The Dial of Destiny?
There are not many movie characters as recognizable as Indiana Jones, with his bull whip and hat. The intrepid archaeologist has grown to become one of the most recognizable and adored protagonists in cinematic history over the course of four wildly successful films. In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Harrison Ford dons the worn-out hat and jacket for the fifth time, promising that this will be the final time he portrays Indiana Jones.

Indiana Jones has always been about one actor, even when it hasn’t been, unlike James Bond or Batman. Although Ford is the actor most people connect with the role, four other actors have also portrayed the valiant explorer. The most notable of these was the late River Phoenix, who portrayed a young Indiana Jones in the first few scenes in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Three actors played the title roles in the early ’90s kid-friendly TV series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which has yet to follow the films to Disney+: Corey Carrier as a young Indiana Jones, Sean Patrick Flanery as Indiana in his teens and 20s, and George Hall as a 93-year-old Indiana recalling his earlier adventures.
Ford even had a strange guest appearance in the Mystery of the Blues episode, which featured Indiana Jones playing the saxophone. Crucially, Harrison Ford has always portrayed Dr. Indiana Jones as a man who divides his time between discovering ancient antiques and teaching archaeology at a university. None of the other actors who portrayed Indiana Jones were as old as Ford was.
