I Need All Sisters Of Mercy Fans To Check In
According to frontman and founding member Andrew Eldritch, The Sisters of Mercy are very much a present band, even though they have not put out an album since 1990 and have not published any new music since 1993.
With Eldritch, guitarists Dylan Smith (since 2019), Ben Christo (since 2006), and Ravey Davey, the “nurse” for the band’s long-serving drum machine, Doktor Avalanche, the band has the most stable lineup in a long time. The Sisters of Mercy are now filling almost half of their setlists with new songs in addition to timeless hits like “Lucretia My Reflection,” “Marian,” and “More.”
On a recent transatlantic conversation from his “industrial super villain” estate in Leeds, UK, where the band was established, you can hear the assurance in Eldritch’s voice. Confident but still cocky, with a dash of the caustic wit that has always been a part of the group.
Similar to his 1990 album Vision Thing, which was primarily about then-U.S. President George Bush Sr. and his administration, new tracks like “Eyes of Caligula” and “Do not Drive on Ice” are ferocious political polemics directed at the UK government.
Speaking of presidents, Eldritch’s final tour with the Sisters of Mercy took place in November 2008, just before Obama was about to be elected. The band’s absence during the past seven years has been attributed, in part, to Donald Trump.
