Emma Raducanu has decided to continue her informal coaching partnership with Mark Petchey, the former coach of Andy Murray, after a successful stint working together during a mid-season break. The duo trained intensively during a 10-day block in Los Angeles following Raducanu’s decision to withdraw from the Billie Jean King Cup and the WTA 250 event in Rouen. Despite the unconventional nature of their collaboration, Raducanu expressed confidence in Petchey’s guidance, citing his trustworthiness and their mutual understanding.
Speaking about the relationship, Raducanu explained that Petchey had a calming influence on her approach, helping her navigate the pressures of professional tennis. The British star noted that her partnership with Petchey was particularly beneficial because of their shared sense of trust and the supportive team environment created by both Petchey and Jane O’Donoghue, a close friend and former player.
Raducanu has faced public scrutiny for her numerous coaching changes since her U.S. Open victory in 2021. However, she has emphasized that her focus now is on maintaining her mental health and well-being, incorporating activities like yoga and hiking to decompress. The 22-year-old also expressed her commitment to a more streamlined and efficient training style that allows her to focus on her long-term goals while ensuring she enjoys the sport.
Despite recent setbacks, including an early exit from the Madrid Open, Raducanu is determined to continue progressing in her career. She will next compete at the Italian Open, with her training sessions continuing under the guidance of Petchey and O’Donoghue. Although Raducanu’s return to form has been hampered by injury and inconsistency, she remains confident that her collaboration with Petchey will help refine her game.
As she prepares for the upcoming tournaments, Raducanu’s new approach reflects her ongoing commitment to improving both mentally and physically, ensuring her future success on the WTA Tour.
