We solicited fan opinions on spring football games earlier this week. Should more teams postpone their games, or should they continue on a national level? The results have been out, and they are overwhelming.
Many programs, notably rival Ohio State, will not play a spring game this year, although Michigan will on April 19. Some teams worry that if they record their players playing in a spring game, other teams might steal their players and lure them into the transfer portal. Matt Rhule, the head coach of Nebraska, has voiced this kind of worry in public. Sherrone Moore, the head coach of Michigan, believes that a spring game has little bearing on whether a player is poached.
Among the teams who will not play in the spring this season are Nebraska, Minnesota, Southern California, Ohio State, Iowa, Missouri, Texas, NC State, Michigan State, Alabama, Auburn, and Florida State.
I think spring football is preferable to no football at all. In the future, I hope Michigan will still host a spring game. Nebraska is following the pattern of publicly expressing concerns about athletes quitting the program. Additionally, it seems
