In a rare moment of candid reflection, Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer admitted on Wednesday that a critical misstep during the recent transfer window could significantly affect the team’s performance in the upcoming season.
Speaking during an offseason press conference, Scheyer acknowledged that the coaching staff miscalculated both timing and negotiations involving a key transfer target, ultimately losing out on a player widely expected to boost the Blue Devils’ frontcourt depth.
“We didn’t act fast enough, and we lost a player who could’ve made an immediate impact,” Scheyer admitted. “It’s on me, and it’s a hard lesson learned. We overestimated our position in that recruitment, and now we have to adjust.”
While Scheyer didn’t name the player specifically, sources close to the program suggest the Blue Devils were in advanced talks with a highly-touted power forward from the Big Ten, who instead committed to a rival ACC school at the last minute. The missed opportunity has left a glaring hole in Duke’s roster, particularly in the post, where the team now lacks size and experience heading into the 2025–26 season.
Fans and analysts have expressed concern, especially with Duke facing a challenging non-conference schedule and a loaded ACC lineup. Scheyer, entering his fourth season at the helm, said the staff is now scrambling to explore late additions and possible overseas talent.
“This program has high expectations — always has, always will,” he said. “We’ll keep looking for the right pieces and we’ll be ready to compete, but yes, this was a costly error.”
The admission has sparked a wave of reaction from the Duke fanbase, with many applauding Scheyer for his honesty, but others questioning whether the young coach is ready to lead the program back to national prominence.
