Done Deal:Philadelphia Eagles sign Pro Bowl safety Malcolm Jenkins to five-year deal setting new Record!
Philadelphia Eagles have signed Pro Bowl safety Malcolm Jenkins to a five-year contract extension. Jenkins was about to enter the final season of a three-year, $15m (£10.6m) deal he signed as a free agent in 2014 but is now signed with the Eagles through 2020.
According to ESPN, Jenkins’ new deal includes $35m (£24.8) in new money and he will get $21m (£14.9) guaranteed. His salary cap hit for 2016, which would have been $7.1m (£5m) under his old contract, will drop to $5.6m (£4m).
Along with defensive end Vinny Curry, tight ends Zach Ertz and Brent Celek, and tackle Lane Johnson, Jenkins’ new contract is the fifth multi-year agreement the Eagles have struck in recent weeks.
Jenkins stated at a news conference on Monday, “I actually told my agent that Philly is a team that I really want to remain with for the long run when I reached out to him at the end of the season, a few weeks back.”
“I obviously had one more year before I had to deal with a lot of unknowns and free agency. I told him that I would love to undertake something long-term if we felt the same way. From then, it became clear that Doug (Pederson), Howie (Roseman), and Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie believed that they were beginning
On a defense that frequently faltered under former coach Chip Kelly, the 28-year-old has been among the more reliable players. Jenkins led the Eagles in tackles (233), passes defended (29), and interceptions (five) during the previous two seasons.
Despite the fact that the other three starters in Philadelphia’s defensive backfield were rookies, Jenkins qualified for the 2015 Pro Bowl. Last season, he had 120 tackles.
Howie Roseman, Executive Vice President of Football Operations, stated, “Malcolm has demonstrated himself as a leader both on and off the field.” “His presence on the team going forward excites us.”
