AP, Oklahoma CityThe Oklahoma Sooners under Patty Gasso have triumphed once more.Oklahoma defeated Texas 8–4 on Thursday night to sweep the Women’s College World Series championship in two games, as they slugged their way to a record fourth consecutive NCAA softball victory thanks to a go-ahead, bases-clearing double from Cydney Sanders.
Under coach Gasso, the Sooners won their eighth overall championship and tied Arizona for the second-most World Series titles, behind UCLA’s twelve. Key players on each of the Sooners’ previous four championship teams included Jayda Coleman, Tiare Jennings, Kinzie Hansen, Rylie Boone, and pitcher Nicole May.
According to Gasso, “they have solidified this program in history.”They have solidified their place in history.These men will always be remembered, even if history changes.Along the way, the Sooners felt the pressure.
“‘Heavy is a head that wears the crown’ is the one thing that really stuck out,” Gasso said. “I heard someone say that. That really has felt true. It’s been exhausting. These players are exhausted, but they keep going.” Kelly Maxwell, an Oklahoma State transfer, was named Most Outstanding Player. The graduate student went 3-0 with a save at the World Series, allowing seven earned runs in 27 innings.
