CONGRATULATIONS: Alexander Zverev has won a prestigious accolade that proclaims him to be the greatest tennis player of all time…
After defeating Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in straight sets on Sunday, Alexander Zverev recorded his 50th Grand Slam victory and advanced to the Australian Open quarterfinals.
The sixth-seeded German player was put to the test in the first two sets, but in the third, he found things easier. An ace helped him win 6-4, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3.
“I am pleased with the three-set victory, especially since there was a chance for both sets to end differently,” Zverev declared.
Zverev spared the 27th-ranked Lajovic his customary battle, as the two had to go five sets each in their prior encounters at the 2018 and 2019 French Opens.
The 23-year-old has advanced to the round of eight with just one set loss, where he will take on either Canadian Milos Raonic or reigning champion Novak Djokovic.
The runner-up at the US Open last year is aiming for his first Grand Slam victory and has advanced to the Australian quarterfinals for the second straight year.
The finest tennis players in the world, according to Alexander Zverev, are “always going to play the Olympics,” making disparaging remarks about those who opt to play somewhere else.
World No. 4 Zverev, who defeated Karen Khachanov to win the gold medal in Tokyo three years ago, will start as the defending champion in the men’s singles competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris this coming weekend.
In the men’s division, Zverev is accompanied by Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic; in the women’s division, the top two players are Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff.
Nevertheless, a number of well-known figures will not be competing; these include Emma Raducanu, Ons Jabeur, Aryna Sabalenka, and Andrey Rublev. The event will take place at Roland Garros.
The switch to clay for the Olympic surface, which occurred only weeks before the US Open, and the absence of ranking points are two grievances against the games.
