Congratulations:JAYLEN BROWN SIGNS NBA RECORD $304M CONTRACT WITH CELTICS
With a supermax contract agreement worth $304 million over five years, the Boston Celtics and star Jaylen Brown struck the richest deal in NBA history. It surpasses the $276 million pact signed by Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic.
After Portland’s Damian Lillard, who inked a two-year extension in 2022 for slightly more at $60.9 million year on average starting with the 2026–2027 season, Brown is only the second player in U.S. team sports history to sign a contract worth at least $60 million annually.
The Brown agreement is the latest in a series of high-paying contracts for NBA players that increase in tandem with the salary cap, which is based on leaguewide revenue. According to Spotrac, 76 players are expected to earn at least $20 million in the upcoming season, and the NBA now has 32 of the 50 largest contracts in North American sports by yearly value.
Future NBA salary caps will determine the final worth of the Brown and Lillard deals. Based on the anticipated caps, the current numbers are estimations. The upcoming TV contract cycle, which begins in the 2025–2026 season, will increase the NBA wage ceiling.
After being named to the second team of the 2022–2023 NBA, Brown, who is represented by Jason Glushon, qualified for a supermax extension, and his teammate Jayson Tatum is also eligible for one next season.
The new contract is expected to start at $52.3 million during the 2024–25 season, while Brown will earn $31.8 million in the last year of his present one. The value of the last year is $69.1 million.
Brown, a University of California student, was selected by the Celtics with the third overall choice in the 2016 NBA Draft. Last season, he led the Celtics to the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year, which is the longest streak in NBA history, and scored a career-high 26.6 points per game.
Off the court, Brown is focused on the business that pays his bills. He is currently the vice president of the National Basketball Players Association and has a growing fashion line called 7uice. At the Variety + Sportico Sports and Entertainment Summit last week, Brown stated, “My day job is my day job and … I got to continue to improve, continuing to work.”
