Charlize Theron admits she had trouble embracing her bombshell role.
In Bombshell, Charlize Theron talked candidly about the difficulties she encountered while playing Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly. Theron is starring in the upcoming movie about the 2016 US network sexual harassment incident that led to CEO Roger Ailes’s dismissal.
Theron revealed that she had trouble embracing Kelly before taking the part, despite the fact that her portrayal may have earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the Oscars.
She told the BBC, “There are things she’s said in the past that have bothered me,” in reference to Kelly’s defense of those who dress in blackface for Halloween. However, as I focused more on the film’s plot, I realized that it wasn’t a biographical account of Megyn Kelly; rather, it was about her year and a half at Fox, and she was one of many women who went through similar experiences before going on to accomplish an otherwise unthinkable feat.
Theron, who co-stars with Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie, said, “And so once I narrowed it down to that, it became easier for me to make it about that, and whether I have issues with her or not, she was part of something that I think will be a historical marker for women’s rights.”
Speaking candidly, the actress—who also co-produced the movie—spoke of narrating a story set before the #MeToo movement, during the Harvey Weinstein case. “Making the movie and watching these things slowly fall apart was really strange.”
