On Friday, Stevie Nicks celebrated her 75th birthday.
Nicks is a rock n’ roll legend who was once dubbed the “Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll” by Rolling Stone. She also made the lists of the 100 Greatest Singers and 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time for her work with Fleetwood Mac as well as for her solo career.
Although it is evident that Nicks was always destined for fame, the two of them were found by Mick Fleetwood and joined the illustrious band Fleetwood Mac as a result of a fortuitous meeting with Lindsey Buckingham during her final year of high school.
The two played guitar together at a church social night shortly after they met Buckingham. They then decided to stay together in the Bay Area so that he could pursue a career in music.
Nicks was under contract to record a country album, but Buckingham was able to get her out of it by convincing her to join the Fritz Rabyne Memorial Band, which he formed after the band’s former lead singer quit. They went on to open for a number of artists, including Santana, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin.
The band disbanded after four years together, which inspired Nicks and Buckingham to form Buckingham Nicks. The two were penniless, but they managed to produce a demo album after getting a sizable inheritance cheque.
According to a press kit made available before to the publication of “The Wild Heart,” Nicks stated, “We did seven songs, and it took us a year.” After they were done, we jumped into Lindsey’s car and headed to L.A., where we were rejected by every record label in the world. They were that excellent. Even though we were heartbroken, we knew we were okay.”
