Carlos Alcaraz weighs in on controversial Rafael Nadal Saudi agreement after joining £6m…..
After Rafael Nadal agreed to become an ambassador for the Saudi Tennis Federation, Carlos Alcaraz expressed his views. The agreement has caused controversy, with some accusing the 22-time Major winner of being involved in “sportswashing,” but Alcaraz thinks Nadal is the ideal candidate. The 20-year-old has already committed to an exhibition event in Saudi Arabia this year, where the winner will receive up to £6 million ($7.5 million).
“Everywhere you look in Saudi Arabia, you can see growth and progress and I am excited to be part of that,” the 14-time French Open champion said of his new role. Amnesty International has already accused the Kingdom of “sportswashing” by using sport to clean up its international reputation. Former pros including John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, and Chris Evert have previously criticised reports that official tennis tournaments could be staged in Saudi Arabia. Nadal recently announced that he would be the new ambassador for the Saudi Tennis Federation. He is set to open a branch of his Rafa Nadal Academy there as a result.
