BREAKING: Texas lands elite 2024 prospect, five-star guard Tre Johnson

Big Time. One of the nation’s top recruits, Tre Johnson, announced that he will be a Texas Longhorn for his college career, which is most likely going to be a one-year affair. He will probably start a very long and fruitful campaign at the top level of professional basketball with his 2024–25 season at UT.

As a student at Dallas’ Lake Highlands High School, Johnson made his national debut. He faced the historically strong back court of Richardson High School at the age of 16, which included Rylan Griffen (Alabama), a possible first-round pick, and lottery pick Cason Wallace (Kentucky).

Although he can score from all three levels, Johnson is a “walking bucket” type who is particularly dangerous from the midrange and perimeter. He is 6 feet 5 inches tall, has great handles for his size and position, and his jump shot has a very amazing rhythm.

In addition to his very excellent talent level, he never seems to mind the defense and, although not an elite, explosive athlete, is still good enough to compete in college and the NBA.

He can shoot both off the grab and the bounce because to his skill with the ball, which greatly facilitates scoring. His jumper is amazing; in my two years of scouting, I have seen some of the greatest at his level. The best, perhaps.

For his final season of college basketball, the Dallas native transferred to Link Prep in Branson, Missouri, which has produced NBA players like Julian Phillips (Chicago Bulls/Tennessee Volunteers), Elliot Cadeau (North Carolina), Felix Okpara (Ohio State), Jordan Walsh (Boston Celtics/Arkansas Razorbacks), and Ja’Kobe Walter (Baylor).

Despite his last two being the Longhorns and Bears, Tre Johnson choose Texas over Baylor, Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, and G-League Ignite. Tre chose to play for Rodney Terry in Austin even though he was a Waco legend as the son of former Baylor player Richard Johnson Jr. He spent some time at last year’s first OV with former Longhorn sensation Kevin Durant, whom he has stated is his favorite NBA player.
