Breaking News:Kentucky basketball guard Lamont Butter has won the sporting news national player of the year….
Lamont Butler signed a contract to become a member of Mark Pope’s first Kentucky Wildcats team in Lexington. The 6-2 guard’s game-winning buzzer-beater to advance San Diego State to the 2023 Final Four was highlighted in the first line of his profile when the program announced his admission on Saturday.
The reigning two-time Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year was brought in to help Pope win games, and that’s exactly why the new head coach is over the moon about his signing.
Pope remarked, “Lamont Butler is the epitome of a winner.” He may be collegiate basketball’s top perimeter defensive player. Lamont, who has contributed to leading championship teams for the past four years, sent his team to the championship game with one of the most spectacular jumpers in the NCAA Tournament.
“I am really thrilled to coach Lamont and to watch the impact he is going to have on this team. He is an exceptional student who takes his studies seriously, cares about the community, and will embrace the power of wearing ‘Kentucky’ across the front of his chest.”
In 131 games for the Aztecs, Butler has averaged 7.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per contest. With Butler on the team, San Diego State finished 104-32 and won two Mountain West regular-season titles as well as two tournaments. Butler will still be eligible for one more season.
When Butler made a buzzer-beater against Florida Atlantic in the 2023 Final Four to advance the Aztecs to the championship game as a junior, it was the most memorable shot in San Diego State history. He was a member of both the All-South Regional Team and the 2023 NCAA All-Tournament Team. In addition, Butler was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year. The native of California’s Moreno Valley averaged 8.8 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest. In addition, he had 57 steals and 126 assists.
