In a remarkable act of generosity and social responsibility, Duke University’s head basketball coach Jon Scheyer has made headlines today by investing an astounding \$30.6 million to convert a sprawling private estate into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The shelter, set to open later this year, will offer housing, education support, mental health services, and vocational training for at-risk and homeless young people in the Durham area. The property, located on the outskirts of the city, spans several acres and will be renovated to include dormitory-style accommodations, recreation spaces, classrooms, and counseling facilities.
Scheyer, known for his leadership on and off the court, described the initiative as a “deeply personal mission” during a press conference held at the Duke campus earlier today. “Basketball has given me a platform, and I feel a deep responsibility to use that platform to impact lives far beyond the game,” he said. “Every young person deserves a chance — not just to survive, but to thrive.”
Local officials have praised the move, calling it a landmark moment for community development and youth support in the region. Durham Mayor Elaine O’Neal said, “This kind of commitment to our city’s most vulnerable youth is truly inspiring. Coach Scheyer is not just building a shelter—he’s building hope.”
Construction on the shelter is expected to begin this summer, with community partnerships already being formed to ensure the facility is fully operational by early 2026.
