Breaking News🚨:Oklahoma makes history at Women’s College World Series with fourth straight championship

Oklahoma City The Oklahoma Sooners have claimed the first four-peat in Women’s College World Series history.

The defending champions never felt like much of an underdog, even when the No. 1 Texas Longhorns faced the No. 2 Sooners for the championship. Game 1 and Game 2 of the championship series were swept by Oklahoma, 8-3 and 8-4, respectively.

On Thursday night, the Sooners used almost all of their pitchers, but it seemed to be largely deliberate. Coach Patty Gasso made a somewhat unexpected decision by starting graduate student Karlie Keeney, who pitched 2 2/3 innings while giving up four hits and two runs. This was only Keeney’s fifth start of the season.

Kayden Henry’s RBI single in the second inning gave Texas the lead before sophomore Paytn Monticelli entered as a reliever. With two outs and the bases loaded, Monticelli, who had not pitched since March 9, ended the inning with a ground out. Nicole May (1 2/3 innings, one hit, one run, four Ks) and Kierston Deal (1 inning) pitched before ace Kelly Maxwell (1 1/3 innings, one hit, one K) sealed the victory.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Fans in the outfield turned their gaze toward left field as Oklahoma’s Kelly Maxwell jogged out of the bullpen. The Sooners were four outs away from a national championship, and Maxwell’s entrance was met with enthusiasm and a collective deep breath.
