In a major setback for the Denver Nuggets’ playoff hopes, star point guard Jamal Murray has officially been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024–25 NBA season. The team announced that Murray has been placed on injured reserve due to a significant right hamstring strain, an injury that has worsened over the past few weeks despite rest and treatment.
Murray, who was already dealing with lingering issues from earlier in the season—including left knee inflammation and a right ankle sprain—had missed a handful of critical games leading up to the postseason. Medical staff determined that continued play risked further damage, prompting the decision to shut him down for the year.
Impact on the Nuggets
The loss of Murray, who averaged 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds this season, is a substantial blow to Denver’s offensive rhythm and leadership. Known for his clutch shooting and chemistry with Nikola Jokić, Murray has been a cornerstone of the Nuggets’ recent success, including their 2023 championship run.
Denver head coach Michael Malone acknowledged the challenge ahead. “Jamal is the heart of our backcourt. Losing him is tough, no doubt. But this team has fought through adversity before, and we’ll lean on each other even more now.”
Next Man Up
With Murray sidelined, the Nuggets are expected to increase minutes for Reggie Jackson and rookie Julian Strawther, while Michael Porter Jr. and Aaron Gordon will be asked to shoulder more offensive responsibility. Coach Malone has hinted at more small-ball lineups and increased tempo to adapt without their star playmaker.
Looking Forward
Currently sitting fourth in the Western Conference standings with a 50–32 record, the Nuggets now face a steeper hill in the playoffs. While Jokić continues to deliver MVP-caliber performances, Denver’s depth and adaptability will be crucial in navigating the postseason without Murray.
There is no timeline for Murray’s return, though team doctors are optimistic about a full recovery in time for training camp next season.
