50 Years Ago: "I am Still in Love With You" by Al Green Reachs Its Pinnacle Al Green's career has been building steadily since the mid-1960s, and Let us Stay Together seemed to be the pinnacle of that development. Entering his fifth year of recording, the January 1972 LP produced a No. 1 album on the R&B chart and a No. 1 pop and R&B single with the title tune. Sitting on their newfound creative energy for too long was a mistake for Green and producer Willie Mitchell, who helped create the iconic sound Green would soon come to be known for. With a combination of covers and original songs, Green's first three albums—Back Up Train, Green Is Blues, and Al Green Gets Next to You—slowly made their way toward the gold template. Over time, the Beatles, Gershwin, and Temptations were among the artists whose covers gained more audacity. For example, Let us Stay Together featured a groundbreaking six-and-a-half-minute rendition of Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." He included some country music to I am Still in Love With You with Kris Kristofferson's "For the Good Times," which became Ray Price's No. 1 country smash and a Top 15 pop song in 1970. More importantly, though, he added a career and a lifetime of conflict between the sacred and secular to his musical stew. The more well-known Green got, the more intense was that internal conflict. (Five years after the singer's lover killed herself and threw boiling grits at him in 1974, he shifted his concentration from mainstream music to gospel.)
