Any Type O Negative Reunion Would Need a Female Singer to Be a True Tribute to…
“When Peter died, Type O Negative died with him,” declared the surviving members of the legendary heavy metal band following the premature death of frontman Peter Steele on April 14, 2010. In the years that followed, guitarist Kenny Hickey, keyboardist Josh Silver, and drummer Johnny Kelly delivered on their promises, but the Type O Negative fan base never shrank—in fact, it grew over time.
Now, any fan of the band would tell you that Type O was much bigger than any one member and much more than the sum of its parts. Silver was one of the most well-known keyboard wizards who (re)introduced the instrument to the early ’90s metal scene, and Jonny Kelly was just as vital to the band’s rhythmic foundation as Pete’s bass was. Kenny Hickey’s nasty doom riffs were among the best of his generation.
However, Peter Steele’s distinct voice and melancholic lyrics served as the band’s glue, the unseen component that transformed a heavy metal quartet into the iconic “Drab Four.”
And while Type O Negative’s drummer Johnny Kelly does not mind having a little “coffee discussion” about a potential short reunion or tribute gig, the band would never be the same without Pete at the front.
